Wendell, Massachusetts was incorporated as a Town - separate from Shutesbury and Ervingshire from which it was formed - on May 8, 1781. While our Town charter is signed by Governor John Hancock, it appears that this particular copy, now in the town's possession, may have been signed by an aide. In those days, the only way to duplicate important documents was to write them by hand.
