GENEALOGY FOR BEGINNERS

WITH SARA CAMPBELL

Sara Campbell

Come and learn how to discover your family history, step by step. We will work together to gain the tools to travel back in time and tell the stories of our ancestors. Were they recent immigrants or Mayflower descendants? Do you have black sheep in the family? This class will feature a different theme every week, where we will discuss both brick-and-mortar resources and digitized records on a variety of web sites. Bring a laptop or tablet if possible to search while we learn.
Possible topics:
1. Getting Started, the importance of documenting sources and starting with the information you already have. You are the expert! Write your own personal history.
2. Vital Records, the dates that form the skeleton of our research. Differences between states. How does one lead to another generation?
3. Census records-why and where are they archived. Which questions were asked in different years, and why? What are free sources to find them?
4. Immigration and movement - why did they move, employment factors, availability of land. Do you know where your family came from?
5. Land Records - how to use the indexes. Hands-on searching Franklin County deeds.
6. Newspapers may open new areas of inquiry or flesh out old stories. Free v. pay sites. What were the local papers?

HISTORY OF VALLEY ROCKERS

WITH EDWARD J. HINES

Edward J. Hines

The Pioneer Valley has a long and rich musical history that covers many styles including rock, jazz, pop, folk, world and classical. Join retired music instructor, performer and local historian Edward J. Hines in an exploration of the music and musicians who have enriched our lives with their art. Choose an artist or group from our list of musicians who began performing locally before 2010. Or, if you have a favorite "oldie" band or artist who began performing before 2010 and who you would like to do research on, that's ok too. You will be guided in collecting the stories of Valley music through photographs, interviews, newspaper articles, audio and video recordings and more. You will then learn to build a Power Point presentation. Bring a laptop or tablet if possible. Each session will include progress reports with the opportunity to present your final project to the public at our last session. All projects will then be considered for inclusion in the Wendell Historical Society's archives.

Classes meet 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM Wednesday June 12, 19, 26 and July 3, 10 and 17. • $50 deposit required with registration, with balance paid on or before June 12, 2024. • Enrollment is limited. • Limited financial assistance available.
